The application process



1. General introduction into the application procedure

The application procedure is a two-step system. The first step is entirely electronic. Applicants must supply all required documentation via e-mail to the e-mail address This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. in a single e-mail as a zip compressed attachment. Selection of applicants who are admitted at this stage takes place upon the submitted electronic documents (preliminary admission).

The second step is only for those applicants who were admitted in the first round. In this round applicants must supply notarized and authenticated hard copies of some of the electronically submitted documents and must supply some additional documentation. Applicants are notified about the verification of the authenticity of their hard copies by the university. The tuition fee must be paid only after the notice is sent about the verification of the authenticity of an applicant’s documentation by the university. An applicant is ultimately admitted after the receipt of the tuition fee.

At the time of the decision about the applicants who are admitted after the first round of the procedure, a waiting-list is created in case an applicant preliminarily admitted fails to supply authentic hard copies of the electronically submitted documentation, or the hard copies are not verified by the university, or he/she fails to pay the tuition, or for any other similar reason.

In case the first round of the application procedure is inconclusive, an extended application deadline is offered for future applicants.

This program is offered to 30 students maximum.



2. The application documentation 1: the electronic round

In the first step of the application procedure, applicants must submit the following documentation via e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. as electronic application material in a single e-mail with a zip compressed attachment containing the below files. External documents should be scanned. Documents are not required to be notarized or legalized (no apostille needed at this point). Wherever translation is needed, it is sufficient that the translation was made by the applicant.

1. Application form filled in by the applicant. The form is available here.

2. A copy of the bank transfer order of the registration fee. If the transfer order does not contain an English translation, then an English translation is needed.

3. A copy of the passport page that contains the personal data and photograph of the applicant. If the passport page does not contain the data of its holder in English, then an English translation of the page.

4. A copy of the law diploma and transcript by the university where the applicant obtained a degree in law. If the applicant has more degrees in law, than a copy for each degree should be sent. If either the diploma or the transcript is not in English, it should be accompanied by an English translation.

5. A Curriculum Vitae (CV) by the applicant in English. The CV should not exceed two A/4 pages. The CV should be in a table format.

6. A Letter of Motivation of not more than one A/4 page written by the applicant in fluent written form (rather than using a table format).

7. A paper of 4-5 pages in law in English. The paper should use font size 12, line-spacing of 1,5 and use normal margins. It should be equipped with usual references and citations in footnotes. The list of available titles is available here.

8. Demonstration of the language skills of the applicant. The following are admitted as verification of the necessary language requirements (any of these would suffice):

  • a copy of the high-school (grammar school / secondary school) diploma where the general language of education was English;
  • a copy of any degree issued in higher education where the language of education was exclusively English;
  • a copy of any of the following language exams with the following minimum scores. Only exams which have not expired by their own terms are admissible. Note, that these are only minimum scores. In case of over-application, language competence of applicants is one of the major factors to be taken into consideration for the decision. No language exam passed before 1 January 2001 is admissible.
    • Trinity SESOL, only after 09.24.2001: Grade 8 or higher. Skills for life (only complex: reading, writing listening and speaking): Level 1 or higher.
    • TELC: ELC, ICC, only after 05.08. 2000: Stage 3. After 08.21.2007: telc B2;
    • ELC: before 06 2008: C. After 06 2008: B2.
    • Cambridge: ESOL: only after 05.05.2003: FCE or higher. IELTS: Level 5.5 or higher. BEC: Vantage A, B, C or higher. ILEC: B2 pass or higher. Skills for Life: readind+writing+listening+speaking, or speaking+listening+writing+OCR adult literacy: Level 1 or higher.
    • City and Guides: only after 07.11. 2011: ESOL+SESOL International: Communicator B2
    • Edexcel: Skills for life, reading+writing+listening+speaking or speaking+listening+writing+OCR adult literacy: level 1
    • PTE General: Level 3, reading+writing+listening: pass; speaking: pass with merit
    • LCCIEB Business, only after 01.11.2013: Level 2, pass with merit or higher.
    • TOEFL IBT, only passed less than two years before application: 66 or higher.
    • TOEIC, only after 01.01.2012: listening: 400-; reading: 385-; speaking 160-; writing 150-.
    • NATO STANAG: reading+writing+listening+speaking: level 2.
    • University of Michigan: ECCE-B2.

9. Two letters of recommendation by two independent evaluators. The letters should be submitted by the evaluators themselves separately and not by the applicant, and should arrive, via e-mail, not later than the application deadline. The letters of recommendation should be written under the official letterhead of the evaluator's insitution, and should indicate the name and position of the person providing the letter of recommendation, adequate employer information and contact data and the capacity in which and the duration for how long the person providing the recommendation has known the applicant. It should describe the nature of their relationship (formal, personal, teacher-student, boss-employee, etc.) The person providing the letter of recommendation should assess and discuss the applicant's professional, language and personal abilities in completing the LL.M. program, living in a foreign environment and his/her ability to coop with cultural differences. The organizers may contact the person providing the letter of recommendation for clarification on any issue that they deem necessary.


3. The application documentation 2: the verification round


Applicants who are notified that they were selected for a preliminary admission have to collect and submit hard copies of the following documents:

  • A copy of the passport page that contains the personal data and photograph of the applicant. If the passport page does not contain the data of its holder in English, then an English translation of the page.
  • A copy of the law diploma and transcript by the university where the applicant obtained a degree in law. If the applicant has more degrees in law, than a copy for each degree should be sent. If either the diploma or the transcript is not in English, it should be accompanied by an English translation.
  • Documents used for the demonstration of the language skills of the applicant.
  • A medical certificate of specific health risks depending on the applicant's country of origin. Details of this are communicated to every applicant in the notification about preliminary admission after the electronic round.
  • A standard Criminal Records Bureau certificate or similar document testifying that the applicant has no criminal record issued by the authorities of the country of permanent residence of the applicant.
  • A statement signed by the Applicant that the documents submitted in the electronic round are authentic. The statement form to be filled and signed is available here.


All documents should be notarized and legalized. Legalization should be arranged in the following way. For applicants from a country which is party to The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (The Apostille Convention) an apostille per document is sufficient. For applicants from other countries, full diplomatic legalization is required. (For the states party to the Apostille Convention, click here).

Applicants must also submit an official English translation of the above documents which are not in English by an authorized translator or translation service, and a separate statement in which the translator or office takes responsibility for the accuracy of the translation, and lists the documents that it has translated. The statement of the translator has to contain all necessary basic company and contact data of the translator to be identified, and has to be notarized and legalized in the same way as the documents themselves.

4. Registration fee, tuition


Registration fee is EUR 30.-, non-refundable. The registration fee of admitted applicants is recognized towards the tuition.

This is a tuition-based program. Tuition for the program is EUR 6000 for the entire program. Tuition covers the teaching program, the degree, a copy of all obligatory teaching material, receptions and social events in connection with the program, the diploma and certificate, participation in moot courts and other competitions. It does not cover housing and other extra services (e.g. visa, medical coverage, etc.).
