Institute of History

The Institute of History of Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary is responsible for providing BA- and MA-level training focusing on historical problems within a chronological context in accordance with the principles set forth in the curriculum of its Doctoral School founded in 2012. As one of the most significant institutes of the Faculty of Humanities, it comprises several departments such as: the Department of Ancient History and Auxiliary Sciences, the Department of Medieval History, and the Department of Early Modern, Economic and Educational History, the Department of Modern and Contemporary History.

In line with the spirit of the mission statement of our university, we are primarily seeking to offer relevant skills and knowledge needed for anyone choosing the profession of a historian. We consider cooperation and creating close links with Reformed grammar schools and organizations containing or associated with collections of the Reformed Church greatly important. For this reason, we offer a variety of specializations in a number of fields, including church and religious history, education history, and conflicts and military history of different political and social systems.

In addition to conferences and workshops organized by staff members, Orpheus Noster, the category A journal of our Institute, provides an opportunity to both undergraduate students and academic staff as well as colleagues of other institutes to publish articles, reviews, and conference papers in the journal, thereby making it possible for the contributors to join the public discourses of professional historians. We have contacts in may partner institutes inside and outside of Hungary and are open to establishing new partnerships in our areas of expertise, such as the Erasmus + KA 203 TEEM (Civic and History Teachers’ Education in Europe:. Modules for the Development of Democratic Competences and Social Responsibility of Teacher Trainees) Project coordinated by the University of Graz.
