Department of English Linguistics

The Department of English Linguistics, a department of the Institute of English Studies, is jointly responsible with the Department of Literary and Cultural Studies in English for the various degree programmes offered by the Institute:

a) BA in English and American Studies;
b) Teacher Training Degree in English (MA);
c) Disciplinary MA Degree in English Studies (MA);
d) a 50-credit programme in English and American Studies which, under certain conditions, can serve as a prerequisite for starting the Teacher Training degree programme or the Disciplinary MA Degree programme in English Studies;
e) and as of September 2013, the new, one-cycle MA degree programme “Teacher of English as a Foreign Language” (at both the primary and the secondary level).

The Department of English Linguistics is responsible for the subjects connected to language practice and linguistics. The courses offered reflect the wide-ranging research interests of our staff, and for this reason, apart from the extremely important language practice module in each of our programmes, phonology, morphology, historical linguistics, translation studies and methodology for teacher trainees receive special emphasis in our curricula. The Department is also the only one in Hungary that offers Irish language courses. Some of our staff also teaches courses in the Department of Literary and Cultural Studies in English due to the interdisciplinary nature of their research interests – especially in the field of Canadian and Irish Studies.

In October 2012 the Department organized an international conference on “Interfaces in English Linguistics”; moreover, in 2012 it also initiated and took a leading part in the organization of a number of conferences which also incorporated linguistics (“Indigenous Perspectives in North America”, the 4th Tolkien Conference, “Representations of Ireland”).
