Bachelor's Programme in Communication and Media Studies

The programme aims to train professionals who understand the communication systems that drive society, social communication processes, and the key institutions of communication and media. Graduates will be prepared to undertake communication-related roles within key institutions of social communication. Their theoretical knowledge will also provide a solid foundation for continuing their studies in the second cycle.

Programme Title

Bachelor's Programme in Communication and Media Studies (with the name of the chosen specialisation):

International Communication

PR and Marketing

Journalism (print, radio, television, online)

Master's programme in Communication and Media Studies

The Master’s programme in Communication and Media Studies at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church primarily welcomes applications from students with a Bachelor’s degree or minor in Communication and Media Studies, but is also open to graduates from other disciplines.

The programme lasts 4 semesters and requires 120 credits for graduation. During an 80-hour summer internship after the first year, students put their learning into practice and gain professional experience to support their future employment. The department provides assistance in selecting internship placements if needed.

The programme's graduates will be communication and media professionals who possess confident knowledge, skills, and practical competence in the communication and media aspects of societal subsystems.

Specialisations Available in full-time study (subject to a sufficient number of applicants):

Specialisation in Digital Communication Management

Specialisation in Creative Media Content Development

The Digital Communication Management specialisation is offered in part-time studies.

Specialisation in Digital Communication Management

This specialisation aims to provide students with a communication-oriented perspective that will enable them to tackle communication challenges and use tools in both the profit-oriented and non-profit sectors with the necessary competence and creativity. Students will learn about the key concepts and issues related to the functioning of traditional and social media, with a particular focus on their digital aspects. This specialisation is recommended for students interested in pursuing a career in public relations, marketing, and media, who want to understand not only traditional marketing communication but also digital communication and communication management comprehensively, and who want to expand their knowledge with up-to-date, practical skills. The programme offers participants the opportunity to learn the operational mechanisms and tools of online communication, including effective content marketing strategies, beyond traditional communication strategies and tools.

Specialisation in Creative Media Content Development

The evolving media environment and the rapidly advancing and widely accessible technological tools of late modernity create specific demands for media professionals. To meet these demands, individuals need practice-oriented training that covers the fundamentals of content development and the unique aspects of content creation across different media platforms. This specialisation is designed for students who wish to work as content development specialists in this new media landscape. It offers an opportunity to acquire the skills to develop interactive, specialised creative content in a controlled environment under the guidance of expert lecturers and industry professionals.

Sociology Full-time and Part-time Bachelor's Programme

In addition to teaching the fundamentals of social science, sociological theory, sociological history and specialised sociology subjects, our programme focuses on methodological and practical training. Students acquire the relevant knowledge in small seminar groups, through practice-related projects and summer internships.

In the full-time Sociology Bachelor's programme, students must choose one of the following specialisations (the chosen specialisation can be taken in the 5th semester if there are enough applicants):

Social Psychology

Project Management

Data Analysis (Big Data Analysis in the curricula prior to 2024)

In the part-time Sociology Bachelor's programme, the Project Management specialisation is part of the curriculum.

Sociology MA Part-time Master's Programme

The first two semesters focus on general theoretical subjects (Sociological Theory, Social History, Social Psychology) and methodological subjects (Quantitative and Qualitative Methods). Specialisation-specific courses begin in the second semester.

In the part-time Sociology Master's programme, the Social Psychology specialisation is part of the curriculum.

The Social Psychology specialisation focuses on interpersonal relationships, organisation and management theory, mediation, conflict management, and the social psychological methods related to these topics.

A key feature of the specialisation is its practice-oriented structure: from the second to the fourth semester, students work on their own projects under the guidance of faculty mentors, and in the third semester, they participate in a two-week internship. The programme also places great emphasis on developing presentation and publication skills, as well as foreign language competencies.

Social Behaviour Analysis Full-time Master's Programme

The first two semesters cover general theoretical subjects (Sociological Theory, Epistemology, Game Theory, Social History, Social Inequalities, Social Psychology) and subjects related to the oral and written presentation of research processes and findings in both Hungarian and foreign languages. Specialisation-based courses begin in the first semester.

Students must choose one specialisation from the following:

- Data-driven Social Research (Big Data Analysis until 2023)

- Social Psychology

The Data-driven Social Research specialisation focuses on Statistical Programming and Analytical Techniques, Network Analysis, Linear Algebra, Multivariate Analysis, Advanced Statistical Methods, Statistical Modelling, and Data Interpretation. The programme will equip students with the basic programming and data analysis skills to adapt to the rapidly changing IT environment.

The Social Psychology specialisation focuses on Interpersonal Relationships, Organizational and Leadership Theory, Mediation, Conflict Management, and the social psychological methods related to these topics. In addition to quantitative data analysis techniques, we place strong emphasis on teaching qualitative research methodology techniques.

The programme is highly practice-oriented: from the first to the third semester, students work on their own projects with faculty mentorship, and in the third semester, they participate in a two-week internship. The programme also places great emphasis on developing presentation and publication skills, as well as foreign language competencies.
