Our department was founded in 1995. The first heads of the department were Dutch collegues (Prof. Arjan van Leuvensteijn and Prof. Agnes Sneller). Our collegue Dr. Júlia Albertné Balázsi took over in 2001, followed by Dr. Anikó Daróczi in 2010.

The current programme (both on BA and MA level) lays a special emphasis on the development of marketable and practical knowledge and skills, and other knowledge necessary for continuing studies in Dutch. Apart from language development, courses are offered on the basics of linguistics and the literature, culture and history of the Dutch-speaking cultures. We pay serious attention to the art history of the Low Countries (in visual arts and the most important periods of music history).

There are eleven full-time faculty members: among them six associate professors and a number of colleagues who are working on their PhD, publishing exensively in variouw fields. Detailed information can be found on our website under the names of the individual members or our Institute. We have two Dutch collegues working full-time, and several others who teach various courses. Language is tought by at least three different language teachers almost every year. In 2013 we launched our Translation Programme.

Our Institute organizes national and international conferences almost each year: we hosted international conferences on Netherlandic Studies in 2005 and one on Mystical Traditions (2013). Every third year we host the Day of Hungarian Netherlandic Studies.

Our students have numerous opportunities to study abroad either in various EU countries within the Erasmus program (Amsterdam, Utrecht, Groningen, Leiden, Antwerp, Gent, Brussels) and the Ceepus Program (Warsaw, Wroclaw, Prague, Bratislava, Vienna, Bucharest, Belgrade).

BA-level programme
The students start learing Dutch form level zero. The first year is first of all a very intensive languge course, but they have to attend courses on the culture of the Low Countries (in Hungarian). Beginning with their second year the programme provids traditional and mainstream courses (extending in literature studies from early literature to that of the 21st century; while in linguistics mostly encompassing morphologiy and phonology as well as descriptive grammar). We offer a specialization in translation which can be continued on MA level and/or in our Translation Programme. Besides these courses and programmes we offer non-compulsory ones as well, thereby extending students’ academic horizons.

Naturally, once enrolled in a BA programme other than Dutch, one can also take up Netherlandic Studies as an academic minor

After completing the BA programme, students can continue their Dutch studies at the MA-level and thus specialise in different fields.

Disciplinary MA program
In 2008, the Institute launched a new disciplinary MA program in Netherlandic Studies. The objective of the two-year program is to acquaint students with a broadly defined concept of Dutch/Flemish literary culture, including its cultural history, major trends, critical schools and, of course, its most representative works and authors. The foundation courses of the program courses on language course, linguistics and literature. While further studying the language and completing foundational courses, students aim at in-depth exploration. Detailed textual analysis with its associated cultural dimension constitutes the core activity in class.
