The main task of the Department of Medieval Studies is to teach medieval Hungarian and European history, but the scholarly staff participates in teaching of the historical auxiliary studies (archaeology, ethnography, anthropology, historical geography, chronology, iconography, epigraphy, etc.), as well as of Latin. Some of the courses are connected to the special programs in military history and in ecclesiastical, religious and cultural history. Scholarly research of the staff covers the following research fields: religious and ecclesiastical history, history of culture and music, military history, material culture – including the history of weapons and armours, epigraphy, urban history, hagiography, historical ecology, history and archaeology of the Steppe region in the Middle Ages.
