Translanguaging for equal opportunities: Speaking Romani at school

Translanguaging, a concept in language theory and language pedagogy, is based on the assumption that, although languages surround us in everyday reality, the linguistic repertoire in the minds of speakers is unitary, whether they are monolingual, bilingual or multilingual. Therefore, the success of speakers with heterogeneous linguistic repertoires in school is increased if they have the opportunity to use all their language resources and complex processes of meaning making in the learning process.

Our project is concerned with the pedagogical practice of introducing, besides the traditional languages of instruction, non-standardised local Romani ways of speaking to European schools. The conference will present the outcomes of the project, to be completed by May 2022: a 35-unit video repository of five to eight-minute short films of classroom moments involving students’ bilingualism in everyday schoolwork, and an English-language volume for teacher trainees and teachers, to be published by De Gruyter, presenting and analysing good practices of pedagogical translanguaging among Roma students.
