Károli University and the Embassy of Ireland in Budapest have long been cooperating in organizing Irish-themed conferences and events, and Irish ambassadors have visited Károli several times and have been guests of honour at several events. One of the specialities offered by Károli University are the Irish-themed courses both in the BA degree programme in English and American Studies and the MA programme in English Studies. These courses cover Irish literature, history, culture and film, and Károli is the only university in Hungary to offer students a beginners’ course in the Irish language.
After his visit to the Rector’s Office, Ambassador Almqvist opened the Samuel Beckett exhibition in the Dózsa György út building of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The exhibition consists of 19 roll-ups presenting the life and oeuvre of the Irish Nobel Laurate, and it was commissioned by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs in 2006 to celebrate the centenary of Beckett’s birth. The exhibition is open until the 10th of April at Dózsa György út 25-27, room 215 (2nd floor).
