Károli Team Wins International Moot Court Competition in Shanghai

The team from the Faculty of Law at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary claimed first place at the international Intellectual Property Moot Court organized by the East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL).

The ECUPL Intellectual Property Moot 2025 featured 14 teams, including two from the United States (University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University), one from Macau (Macau University of Science and Technology), several from China (e.g., Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University), and, as the only Hungarian higher education institution, the Károli Gáspár University Faculty of Law team. Representing Hungary’s third-ranked law faculty, Károli competed in a highly prestigious field: according to the QS University Rankings, Tsinghua University is ranked 17th globally, while the University of Pennsylvania holds 15th place.

The Károli team consisted of two students from the unified law program, fifth-year Zsófia Tarjáni-Nagy and fourth-year Botond Lezsák, as well as Shana Hailati, a student in the European and International Business Law (LL.M.) master’s program. The team was coached by Ádám Boóc, Associate Dean for International and Academic Affairs and Head of the Institute of Private Law at the Faculty of Law.

The competition consisted of written and oral rounds, in which participants were required to solve a fictional trademark law case concerning milk substitute products. In the written round, the Károli team scored the highest points and was also awarded the Best Respondent’s Memorandum. The oral round took place on November 24 in Shanghai, where the students performed confidently, ultimately securing the overall victory. This marked the first time a Hungarian law faculty team won an international moot court competition in China. Additionally, the title of Best Oralist was awarded to Károli student Shana Hailati.

The written submissions and oral presentations were evaluated by a panel of nine distinguished Chinese legal professionals specializing in intellectual property law, representing both theoretical and practical expertise.
