Renáta Katona, a first-year Pre-School Teacher student of our University won the silver medal in the Women's Sabre Competition in Düsseldorf on 20 June 2019.
The Hungarian Women’s Sabre Team (further members are Anna Márton, Liza Pusztai and Luca László) beat Ukraine in the quarterfinals, 45-44, and faced France in the semifinal, 45-40. Hungary competed against Russia in the final round for the gold medal, with Russia scoring a 45-34 victory. Final rankings included Russia (gold), Hungary (silver), France (bronze).
The achievement is of great significance since the Hungarian Women’s Sabre Team reached the finals for the very first time in the history of the Fencing European Championships, not to mention this victory adds crucial points to Hungary’s qualification for the Olympic Games 2020.
In her statement for the Hungarian Fencing Federation, Renata shared: “I am very happy with what was achieved today. This is the greatest accomplishment of my career to date, and I have a strong feeling that this winning will propel me in even greater heights!”.
