Department of Chinese Studies

The history of teaching Chinese language at KRE goes back a quarter of a century. Students could have picked up Chinese as a foreign language as early as 1998, the 25th jubileum of which we celebrated during the 2023-24 academic year.

Between 2013 and 2020 a Specialization Programme for Chinese language and culture was taught in a two-years scheme for undergraduate students.

Following the successful accreditation process a full Chinese BA program was started alongside with a Specialization in Chinese Social Studies in 2020/2021. The research area of our teaching staff covers almost all special fields of Chinese Studies offering our students a wide range of courses and subjects. Major topics of education and research according to the research areas of our instructors are: history of modern China, contemporary Chinese society, classical Chinese literature, translation studies, classical Chinese philology, Chinese linguistics, history of Chinese minorities, cultural anthropology of East and Inner Asia, modern Chinese politics, Sino-European cultural and political ties.

The aim of the education is to train specialists with a comprehensive knowledge in Chinese studies. Students are provided with a high-level theoretical and practical knowledge of the Chinese language and culture that they may utilize in research or in various spheres of modern Chinese social, cultural, political, and economic life.

Students have a great chance to improve their language skills in native environment via our international cooperations with partner universities both in Mainland China and in Taiwan.

Our graduates gain enough professional skills either to find employment as China experts, analysts, interpreters/translators at foreign relations organizations, Chinese, Hungarian, and multinational companies, or they can continue their studies participating in a master's program.
