17° Summer School: MIGRANTS HUMAN RIGHTS DEMOCRACY

The Summer School is an international event aimed at academics, practitioners, BA and MA students, professionals working in the fields of forced migrations, human mobilities, refugees and humanitarism. The Summer School offers an international context in dealing with human rights field, displaced lives and vulnerability in the Euro-Mediterranean area issues aimed in Palermo. The registration fee (€ 600) provides academic program, didactic material, conference kit, coffee breaks, lunches, monumental tours; travel and accommodation costs are not included. Experts and guest speakers contribute to the studio by giving dynamic lectures or presenting case studies.

European Studies Austrian Arbitration Academy & German Language Courses

SUMMER SCHOOL I 2023

"The Right to Disagree - Human Rights and Freedom of Expression in Europe Today"

This program, taught in English, focuses on the importance of freedom of expression as a basic human right and as a core value of democratic societies in Europe today. How is freedom of expression under attack in Europe? What is populism and why is it a threat to democracy? What is the nature and intention of hate speech? Courses will rely on various scientific perspectives to focus on the challenges that European societies face, especially populist parties, and movements. We will also get out of the classroom and meet with European politicians and experts in these fields.

"Quo vadis Europe? The EU and the Question of Identity"

This program, taught in English, deals with the general dynamics of European Integration and with the EU as a unique political system consisting of very diverse member states with distinct national cultures. The past decades have seen the emergence of a plethora of challenges that could threaten the community’s “we feeling” – hence, what held its societies together. Courses cover current European debates on the possibility of a European iden-tity and ask whether the EU is fit enough for the future. We will also get out of the classroom and meet with European politicians and experts in these fields.

SUMMER SCHOOL III 2023

"The EU in Permanent Crises? Perspectives, Challenges, Solutions"

This program, taught in English, deals with the political and societal dynamics of European Integration and with the EU as a unique multi-level political system. The past years have seen the EU facing a lot of criticism from various sides and a plethora of challenges threaten the community - internally and externally - and what held its societies together for a long time. Hence, courses cover the current challenges Europe and the EU face today: Brexit, political fragmentation and radicalization, and war.​ We will also get out of the classroom and meet with European politicians and experts in these fields.
